About Qambathi Mountain Lodge

Qambathi Mountain Lodge is set in the heart of the Kamberg Valley, within the central Drakensberg — a landscape shaped by ancient geology, San Bushman history and generations of farming life. The mountains that rise around the lodge are known as Ukhahlamba, the Zulu “Barrier of Spears”, a name that perfectly captures both their beauty and their presence.

This land has long been a place of movement, shelter and story. Long before farm boundaries existed, it was traversed by the San people, whose deep spiritual connection to the land and reverence for animals such as the Eland still echo through the valley today. Qambathi exists as a place of continuity, where history, nature and considered hospitality meet.

At the heart of the lodge stands the original farmhouse, built in 1918. It now houses the dining room, kitchen and two guest rooms, while retaining its original character. Surrounding buildings once served as a post office, classroom, greenhouse, stables and milking sheds, reflecting a time when the farm functioned as a self-contained rural hub. The cottage, now a peaceful retreat, was originally used as a small holding jail for cattle thieves. These layers of history have been preserved rather than erased, giving Qambathi a strong sense of place and authenticity.

Qambathi is owned and run by Stephen Maritz, a South African, and Nadia Maritz, who was born and raised in Poland. Their journey to this land was neither quick nor straightforward. After years spent living and working in Europe, building corporate careers and chasing conventional measures of success, both felt a growing pull toward a simpler, more grounded way of life.

Time spent in South Africa — particularly in the mountains and wilderness — brought clarity. What they were searching for was not more, but less: less noise, less urgency, and more connection to nature, community and purpose. The decision to move was followed by years of planning, uncertainty and setbacks, but also a deepening conviction that this was the right path.

From the moment Qambathi became their home, the vision was clear. This would not be a large or commercial lodge, nor a destination built around excess. Qambathi would remain intentionally small, hosting a limited number of guests to preserve privacy, calm and personal connection. The aim was to create a retreat that feels lived-in rather than staged, and welcoming rather than formal.

Living lightly on the land is central to how Qambathi operates. The lodge is on a deliberate journey toward becoming fully off-grid, with significant investment already made in renewable energy systems and sustainable infrastructure. Water is carefully managed and sourced on the property, and energy use is consciously monitored. These choices are not driven by trend, but by responsibility and long-term stewardship.

Sustainability informs every aspect of daily life at Qambathi. The lodge operates without single-use plastic packaging, uses locally made, eco-conscious room amenities, and is furnished with handcrafted pieces sourced from local artisans, many created using recycled materials. The aesthetic is understated and honest, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain the focus.

Food is a cornerstone of the Qambathi experience. Meals are seasonal, nourishing and rooted in South African flavours, designed to be comforting and generous rather than showy. Nearly all produce is sourced within KwaZulu-Natal, with a strong emphasis on organic vegetables and free-range, responsibly farmed meats. Menus change with the seasons and reflect what is fresh and available. The wine list follows the same philosophy, celebrating boutique South African producers chosen for quality, character and sense of place.

Conservation is inseparable from hospitality at Qambathi. The reserve is being carefully restored to its natural state, with the aim of creating a healthy, balanced ecosystem where wildlife can thrive. Guests may encounter Eland, Bushbuck, Duiker, Oribi, Serval, Caracal, Leopard, Jackal, Grey Rhebok and the iconic Bearded Vulture, among many other species. Wildlife is always observed from a respectful distance, allowing natural behaviours to remain undisturbed.

The Kamberg Valley is known for its dramatic skies and rapidly changing weather. Storms can roll in quickly, bringing intense rain and lightning before clearing just as suddenly. These moments are part of life in the mountains and often best enjoyed indoors, by a fire, with good food and a glass of wine. It is this balance between wildness and comfort that defines the Qambathi experience.

At its core, Qambathi is about slowing down. It is a place to wake with natural light, walk without urgency, share long meals, and rediscover the restorative power of stillness. It is not about entertainment or distraction, but about presence.

Stephen and Nadia see themselves not simply as lodge owners, but as custodians of this land. Their focus is on long-term care, meaningful conservation, and ensuring that Qambathi remains authentic, intimate and deeply connected to its surroundings for generations to come. Qambathi Mountain Lodge is a place for those who seek something quieter, more thoughtful and rooted in nature. We are proud to share this land, this story and this way of living with you.
